MINNEAPOLIS — Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz embraced his roots by visiting Minnesota’s state fair, indulging in local delicacies and highlighting the state’s rich agricultural sector. Accompanied by his wife Gwen, daughter Hope, and a security detail, Walz enjoyed a pork chop on a stick and a vanilla shake as he navigated through rows of food vendors.
“For those not from Minnesota, just to be clear, there’s a lot of great state fairs in the country; this is the best one,” Walz proclaimed. “I can say that having tried pork chops in Iowa.”
The annual 12-day fair provides a platform for Minnesota farmers to showcase their produce, and Walz took the opportunity to underline the state’s agricultural contributions as he strolled past booths with slogans like “PUT SOME PORK ON YOUR FORK” and “#PORKPROUD.” The governor’s visit attracted cheering fairgoers eager to shake hands and snap photos.
Walz acknowledged that his role as Kamala Harris’ running mate brought additional attention to the already bustling fairgrounds in Falcon Heights, a St. Paul suburb. However, he saw this as a chance to promote Minnesota’s economy and cultural identity.
“I think people are seeing that we’re getting to talk about Minnesota across the country, talk about the economy here, talk about things like the state fair, talk about agriculture,” Walz said.
Looking ahead, Walz plans to meet with union leaders in Milwaukee on Labor Day, furthering his outreach efforts.
